Revlon CustomEyes mascara review

First makeup product review~!

setting 1: length and drama

Which is not going to end nicely because to sum up this review before it’s begun, this mascara is not very good.

First of all it’s one of the 2-brushes-in-1 mascaras, which in this case means that twisting in the handle gives 2 options, “Length and Definition” and “Length and Drama”. As can be seen in the pictures this mascara clearly has a plastic bristle brush, which started off purple-blue (bought it before starting blog so no pictures of clean brush).

Length and Drama

Length and Definition
Honestly I’m not entirely sure what twisting the handle actually DOES to the wand. I spent 3 minutes just twisting it back and forth and the best that I can tell you is that about half of the bristles move slightly. More specifically alternate rows of bristles along the wand move from side to side, a bit like the cilia on a comb jelly (phylum: Ctenophora), if you’ve ever seen a documentary on the deep sea. I assume the aim is to scrape more of the product off in the “Length and Definition” setting, providing a cleaner look than the “Length and Drama” setting. Quite frankly I didn’t see any difference at all but that doesn’t mean this mascara is useless, just that the gimmick didn’t work in this case.

Unfortunately, at least for me this mascara IS in fact useless.

I have short and sparse lashes, and my main aim in using mascara is length rather than volume. This mascara did not deliver length, and it only partly delivered volume. One coat made my lashes a bit thicker, a little bit longer, i.e. a little more obvious. A second coat and they started to clump a little and thicken a bit more but it never got much better than that. More coats led to the mascara thickening to the point where my lashes started to stick together.
The mascara didn’t clump all my lashes together so much as form uneven coats of blackness on my lashes that sometimes stuck to each other. The first mascara I ever tried was the lengthening version of the covergirl lashblast and my lashes actually got stuck together upon first application (in hindsight I was a total mascara noob so it might not have all been the mascaras fault), so by comparison this mascara didn’t clump my lashes together, so much as make them a bit clumpy by themselves.

In terms of the packaging the tube design does seal nicely and the stopper does wipe off most of the excess mascara. The lettering didn’t rub off easily which is nice and the mechanism to switch between styles never broke, although there wasn’t much difference anyway.
setting 2: length and definition

And when I finally got around to buying a lash curler, more than one coat of this mascara caused my lashes to start to droop and lose the curl. I know for sure it was the mascara because I curled my lashes and left them bare, and there was still a kink 8 hours later (it was only a kink because I only curled at the base once and I’ve learnt that’s not the best way to curl straight lashes like mine.)

Overall this mascara was neither good nor bad, but considering the average shelf-life of a mascara and the price of mascaras in Australia, I’d skip it if I were you. I bought it on sale (~$11, retail = ) and I still feel like it’s a waste of money, though at least it made for good practice. This product didn’t prove very popular (can’t imagine why) I think because I don’t think it’s sold in Australia anymore.

Effectiveness: 2/10
Feel: 5/10 ? the mascara itself wasn’t uncomfortable but the plastic bristles were a bit prickly
Packaging: 6/10
